Wake-up Call http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/opinion/blogs/lawless/ Mon, 02 Apr 2012 12:45:00 GMT Quick Fix http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/opinion/blogs/lawless/?plckController=Blog&plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&userId=44a1f36a-e745-424a-b2cc-df221f6c3b31&plckPostId=Blog%3a44a1f36a-e745-424a-b2cc-df221f6c3b31Post%3af24f54eb-def1-405e-a9c2-6734aa68cf09&plckScript=blogScript&plckElementId=blogDest Mon, 02 Apr 2012 12:45:00 GMT
Nail Yakupov is still believed to be the top rated junior in the world but scouts won’t get a chance to see him play deep into the OHL playoffs or at the Memorial Cup as his Sarnia Sting were eliminated on Sunday night.

Jets prospects Mark Scheifele and Ivan Telegin play a big game tonight as they host the Mississauga St. Mikes Majors in Game 6 of their best of seven. Barrie leads 3-2. Telegin has four goals and an assist in the series while Scheifele has one goal and two assists. Scheifele was banged up in Game 5 and his status for tonight is unclear.

Flyers/Pens: Things that stuck out to us after the Flyers and Penguins melee on Sunday afternoon. With all the coaches chirping on the bench and acting tough, the one guy that could actually fight in his career was playing peacemaker.

Flyers assistant Craig Berube, one of the hardest men in hockey during his career, didn’t get involved in the screaming match but instead tried to make sure his coach Peter Laviolette didn’t go too far. Sydney Crosby after the game on all the nonsense, “It was a clean hit. Their coach called it bull.... Tell him it’s a 60 minute game and maybe he shouldn’t have had those guys on the ice.” Laviolette on Joe Vitale’s hit on Danny Briere, “It was gutless.” These teams are destined to meet in the first round of the playoffs and should be a big TV draw.

Back to work: The Jets will get back at it this morning after taking Sunday off in Fort Lauderdale. The team will skate and get an update on some injuries and figure out who will be available for Tuesday’s game against the Florida Panthers. Forward Kyle Wellwood was limping around the dressing room after Saturday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning and his status for Tuesday is unclear. Word around the Jets is that Patrice Cormier will be recalled from St. John’s.

gary.lawless@freepress.mb.ca

Twitter: @garylawless
Blog:44a1f36a-e745-424a-b2cc-df221f6c3b31Post:f24f54eb-def1-405e-a9c2-6734aa68cf09
